A long weekend in Queenstown

Little time, but still want to see the South Island? Queenstown is a great starting point for a short adventure in September. The summer crowds have gone, and the mountains still look wintry.

Friday evening: arrival at the lake

You arrive in a town built around a lake, with snow-capped mountains in the background. It is chillier here in September than in summer, so bring a warm jacket. Find a café to warm up and plan your weekend.

A campervan trip through the whole South Island is something you should consciously skip. With just two days, you simply do not have enough time for that.

  • Find a café by the lake to warm up and decide your route for the weekend.
  • Bring a warm jacket, as evenings can be cold in September.
Queenstown sits on a lake, surrounded by mountains that hold snow all year round.

Saturday: adrenaline and views from above

Saturday is for the big experience. You can skydive over glaciers and lakes, often with clear skies and sharp visibility in September. Keep in mind that a jump is pricey.

If you would rather sit than jump, book a Fly-Cruise-Fly tour from Queenstown. You fly in a small plane over the peaks to Milford Sound, cruise through the fjord and fly back. This also costs a lot, but you see in one day what others do not see in an entire trip.

  • Book the Fly-Cruise-Fly tour from Queenstown in advance, as spots are limited.
  • Choose skydiving if you would rather go up into the air yourself than watch.

Sunday morning: peace at the fjord

Before you leave, look for some peace. Milford Sound is famous, but also busy. Doubtful Sound is quieter and you meet far fewer people there.

With more time, you could book an overnight stay on the water. For a short weekend, a day tour from Queenstown fits better: you see the fjord, and in September you often sail through mist above the water.

  • Choose a day tour to Doubtful Sound from Queenstown if you only have one day.
  • Do not travel to day tours on the local bus, book the tour directly from Queenstown.
