Four days through Lesvos and Kefalonia: a roadmap
October is a lovely time to visit Greece. The summer crowds have faded, yet the weather remains pleasant. This route takes you across two islands: first Lesvos, with its authentic villages and potteries, and then Kefalonia with its diverse coastline. Plan for at least four days, though six is even better.

Day 1: Arriving on Lesvos, heading to Petra
Your journey begins on Lesvos. Many travellers take the ferry from Chios. Once you arrive, you can explore the capital, Mytilene, with its narrow streets and old stone buildings. However, the highlight of the day is the village of Petra.
Petra sits on a sandy bay and feels like a village that welcomes tourists without feeling like a theme park. You will stay here for the next two nights. Along the coast you will find restaurants, cafés and bars. The houses have high ceilings, and many still have that charming, old-fashioned interior with tall windows.

Day 2: The hinterland and ceramics
Today you leave the coast and drive to Agiasos, a mountain village where local potters make and sell their work. It is a peaceful place where you can wander through the streets and watch real village life unfold.
Back in Petra, you will have some time to spare. You can drive to the old town of Mithymna (a short trip), or seek out the petrified forest in the west. Both are quieter corners of the island where you really feel off the beaten track.

Day 3: Ferry to Kefalonia
Today you leave Lesvos and take a ferry to Kefalonia. This is the largest of the Ionian islands and feels much wilder: mountainous, with winding mountain roads and much more to see.
Book your rental car in advance. If you reserve one a few days ahead, a car costs around €25 per day. Without a rental car you will be limited, and since Kefalonia is mountainous with villages scattered around, you need mobility to get around. Spend this night in Argostoli, the largest town.

Day 4: Beaches and thermal baths
This day is for the coast. You will drive to Myrtos Beach, famous for its water and the tall cliffs behind it. It is a drive of over an hour from Argostoli, so leave early.
If you still have energy, visit the thermal baths of Eftalou (entry €4 per person), a former natural bath where warm water rises straight from the ground. End your four days in the small harbour town of Fiskardo, where you can eat well and feel as though you have discovered a secret.
