Visiting Madrid smartly: avoid the biggest mistakes
Madrid in September is lovely: warm, but not stifling. The city is full of tourists, so a little preparation will save you hours of waiting and disappointment. Here are the five things visitors stumble over most often.

Transport: stay central, travel fast
Madrid has a fast metro and plenty of electric bikes. You can get anywhere. However, where you stay makes a big difference. If you stay in the centre, everything is a shorter walk away. If you stay outside, you waste hours in traffic.
If your itinerary is packed with museums and sights, stay central. You will fit in far more in five days than in three.

Museums: buy tickets on-site, not online
The Museo Cerralbo is unique: you see weapons, art, and furniture from a noble family's private collection. But there is one strict rule: you cannot buy tickets here online. They only sell them on-site.
The queue can be an hour long. If you arrive at 9:00 (when it opens), you will be at the front. If you arrive at 12:00, you will be queuing for hours.
- Museo Cerralbo: buy your ticket on-site at opening (9:00).
- Football matches can easily cost €1,000 per ticket. Tour the Santiago Bernabéu stadium instead (much cheaper, just as fun).
Eating: do not go to the market at twelve o'clock
Madrid loves to eat, and to eat together. Markets like Mercado de la Paz are lively and delicious. But guess when they're at their busiest? Around midday, when you can barely move.
Go early (around 8:00) or late (after 14:00). Food tours through tapas bars, including wine, cost around €50-70 and are much more relaxing. Want something more luxurious but affordable? El Gourmet Experience is located in the El Corte Inglés department store and offers good food without overspending.
