When to travel to the Khao Sok jungle?
Khao Sok is one of Thailand's most beautiful places: massive limestone rocks rise from the lake, and the jungle is dense and green. But timing is everything. In the dry season you can enjoy it to the fullest. In September, it rains a lot, and that changes everything.

The dry season: November to May
This is the best time for Khao Sok. The weather is stable, the sun shines often, and you can hike and boat without any worries. The paths are dry, the lake is full, and the boat trips are pleasant. You see the jungle in its full glory without standing knee-deep in mud.
The water quality is good for canoeing on the Sok River. Temperatures hover around 25 to 30 degrees. You can do everything here: hiking, boat trips, sleeping in a treehouse, or seeing nature at night. This season attracts more visitors, so expect more crowds and higher prices.
- Plan for at least 2 days, as one day feels too short.
- Bring good hiking shoes with grip, not flip-flops, as the paths are steep and narrow.

September: rain and mud
September falls within the rainy season. You will get many showers, sometimes very heavy ones. The paths become slippery and muddy. Hiking is harder and sometimes unsafe. You can still go on boat trips, but the weather may not cooperate.
However, it is much quieter, so there are fewer visitors. The jungle is intensely green. And prices are lower. If you do go in September, choose activities on the water over long hiking trips. Expect to get wet, and note that some routes may be closed.
- Wear hiking shoes with good grip or trail shoes, not your normal trainers.
- Use a waterproof bag for your phone and wallet.
The practical route
Khao Sok is located 80 kilometres east of Surat Thani and 150 kilometres north of Phuket. It is a perfect stopover if you are travelling between islands, for example from Koh Phangan to Koh Phi Phi or vice versa.
Most travellers stay in Khao Sok Village. Here you will find hostels and small guesthouses. The boat trips depart from the Ratchaprapha Pier, about an hour's drive away. But do not worry: if you book a tour, they arrange the minibus ride to the pier.
If you want to drive yourself, you'll have more flexibility. Without a car: take a minibus for convenience, or a bus to save money. Avoid day trips from Phuket or Krabi: that is 3.5 to 4 hours of driving there, and then back again. You will spend more time driving than enjoying yourself.
