Transport between cities

The bus is not always the cheapest choice in Colombia. Budget airlines such as Viva sometimes offer flights that are cheaper than the bus, although strict rules apply to your luggage. Always compare prices first.

Still want to take the bus? Choose a reliable company such as Expreso Palmira or Expreso Trejos. Their websites show the timetable and price in advance. Book your flight on time, since prices rise in October as the departure date approaches.

  • Always compare flight prices with bus tickets first.
  • Book your flight well in advance for the best price.
  • Check Viva's luggage rules in advance.
Between the coffee fields and the coast lies a country best discovered on the ground, from bus to bus.

Language and socialising

A little Spanish will get you much further in Colombia. Without the language, you can easily get stuck when booking a bus or ordering a meal. Learn a few basic phrases before you depart.

Colombians are open and direct with their feelings. Compliments and attention come more quickly and warmly than you might be used to in the Netherlands. If you start a relationship with someone here, that person may want something serious sooner than you expect. It is good to know that in advance.

  • Learn a few basic Spanish phrases before you depart.
  • Do not be surprised by direct, warm attention from people.

Walking in October

October is a good month to explore Colombia's nature. The paths are easy to walk then, and the Cocora Valley, with its tall wax palms, is one of the country's most beautiful walks. Allow about five hours for the whole route.

If you visit Tierradentro National Park, you won't be able to see everything in one day. Several paths wind around the ancient tombs. Plan at least a day, preferably two, to walk them all.

  • Allow about five hours for the walk through the Cocora Valley.
  • Plan a day or two for the paths of Tierradentro.

Budget and planning

Colombia is a country where you can do a lot on a small budget. In October, a domestic flight from Bogotá to Medellín sometimes costs only 55,000 Colombian pesos if you book on time. Always compare that price with a bus fare.

If you want to visit the islands of San Andrés or Providencia, plan that trip well in advance. That way you avoid paying much more for a flight or crossing at the last minute.

  • Compare the flight and bus price for every route.
  • Book a trip to San Andrés or Providencia well in advance.
