The golden glow of a French late summer
The warm afternoon sun glides over the fields as the last summer guests depart. France feels slightly different in September, as if the country finally wants to receive you alone.

Versailles in the quiet afternoon
You stand before the enormous gates of the Palace of Versailles and suddenly feel very small. This is the place where the power of Louis XIV still hangs in the air. After 45 minutes on the RER C train from Paris, you are there. It was the political heart of France from 1682 to 1789 and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
In the Hall of Mirrors, light falls on the golden details, and you stand in the very room where the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The state apartments shine with opulence. In September, the groups are smaller than in July and August, so you have more space to stand still.
Sunlight falls through the high windows of the Hall of Mirrors and the gold truly seems to dance.France
The Louvre, where Paris unfolds
Paris draws you through streets where artists and writers found their inspiration. The Louvre waits with its collection: the Mona Lisa behind glass, centuries of history on the walls. It is the kind of place where you lose hours without noticing.
As you walk through the city, you notice small things. The French tend to speak softly in public spaces, so keep that in mind. You can drink the tap water straight from the tap, so you do not have to carry bottles around. Get a SIM card if you want to use your phone. They are available everywhere for short stays.
The Loire: castles without haste
The Loire Valley is full of Renaissance castles, each like a jewel in the landscape. The countryside is carefully tended and history breathes from every stone. This is the kind of area where you dedicate a day to one village, not three.
Forget the idea of rushing through Versailles, Mont Saint Michel and the Loire Valley in a single day. It is not possible. The travel times are far too long. Take one place per day and let the stillness settle in. That is what September is for: you finally have the time.
The coast: salt and light
The wind brings the sea air as you look out at the French coast. Brittany is wild and rocky, while the Riviera in the south lies glistening in the sun. Every stretch of coast feels different.
At breakfast, you eat a croissant that is still warm from the bakery, so flaky that it falls apart in your mouth. Every region has its own dishes: raw lamb in Brittany, fish along the Mediterranean, cheeses that taste of their place. You do not just eat France, you experience it with all your senses at once.
