Yamuna river
At the Yamuna river, you see the daily life of ordinary people up close. The river is considered sacred, yet it is also heavily polluted. That contrast is exactly what makes it such a striking place to photograph. You will see scenes here that you won't come across anywhere else in the city.
It is only by the roadside, with a cup of tea in your hand, that you truly see India pass you by.India
Shillong
Shillong is often called the Scotland of the East because of its green hills and fresh climate. The city has its own rock music scene, carried by the indigenous Khasi people. October is a good time to walk through the city and find a local performance. It is music you won't easily hear anywhere else in India.
Ashrams around Rishikesh
Dozens of ashrams lie around Rishikesh, where you can stay for a while. These are places for yoga, meditation and rest, far from the bustle of the big cities. If you want to really experience it, set aside at least two weeks. October is a pleasant time to arrive, with a calmer rhythm than in a big city.

Delhi railway station
Delhi's main railway station is a world of its own. You see travellers, porters, vendors and families, all moving at once. Just half an hour of watching gives you a good sense of how big and busy India is. It is not a sight in the classic sense, but it is a place that stays with you.

A roadside chai stall
In October, find a stall and order a chai, the Indian tea made with milk and spices. Sit on a bench or a step and just watch the world go by for an hour. You will see cows among the traffic, children playing cricket and shopkeepers chasing off monkeys. You learn more about India this way than in any museum.

Goa, inland
Away from Goa's well-known beaches lie places built around yoga, set among palm trees and rice fields. It is a quieter side of Goa, focused on movement and catching your breath. In October, this inland area is a good starting point if you want to look beyond the coast. The pace here is different from the one at the beach.

Street food in Delhi
Delhi's street food scene is a world of small stalls, each with its own speciality. Every stand has its own dish, from fried snacks to fresh chaat. Eat with your hands, as most people here do: it feels more direct and usually earns you a smile. This is how you taste the city the way its residents do.
