November to April is the dry season: ideal weather, calm seas and optimal snorkelling conditions. December and January are busiest (and most expensive). May to October is the rainy season: heavy downpours, rough seas (Railay may be unreachable by boat) and 30-50% lower prices. September, October is the wettest; May, June remains fairly pleasant.

Minibus (AOT Airport Limousine, ~150 THB per person, 40 mins) runs directly to Ao Nang hotels. Taxi is faster (~500 THB, 30 mins) but pricier. No public buses run directly to Ao Nang, take the minibus or Grab for comfort.

By longtail boat only: there is no road access (sheer limestone cliffs surround Railay). Boats depart from Ao Nang (15 mins, ~100 THB per person) and from Krabi Town pier (30 mins, ~150 THB). Boats run from 7:00 to 19:00; after dark available until ~23:00 for a surcharge.

Krabi is quieter, more characterful and cheaper than Phuket. Phuket has better flight connections, more nightlife and higher-end accommodation. Krabi has Thailand's finest beaches (Railay), the best climbing venues and fewer crowds. For peaceful beach time: Krabi. For convenience and luxury: Phuket. The two are 2.5 hours' drive or 45 minutes' boat journey apart.

Yes, Krabi is one of Thailand's most family-friendly beaches. Ao Nang has calm water in the dry season, easily accessible restaurants and short distances. Railay is less suitable for small children (boat ride plus climb to the beach). The Four Islands Tour works well, calm seas, snorkelling and coral reefs that captivate young children too.
