Safari and national parks

Kruger National Park is the most famous, but there are more parks worth exploring. Addo National Park gives you an authentic safari experience without the crowds. St. Lucia Wetlands is perfect if you love water and birds. Umfolozi National Park lies further off the beaten track and feels much quieter.

You'll spot lions, elephants and giraffes in the wild here. These are the highlights backpackers come for.

  • Addo National Park is smaller than Kruger, but just as good and quieter.
  • St. Lucia Wetlands is ideal for birdwatchers.
Drive from Cape Town to Johannesburg and you'll pass game parks, deserts and small wine regions.

Travelling on a small budget

South Africa is a great place for cheap travel. A double room in a guesthouse costs €25 to €45 a night. You don't need expensive hotels.

Don't eat out every day. At Pick n' Pay supermarket, you'll find fresh food for a lot less. Two people can travel on around €110 a day, including car, petrol, food, park entry fees and drinks. That covers everything.

  • Buy your food at Pick n' Pay supermarket instead of eating out.
  • €110 a day per person for two people is realistic for a budget trip.

Transport and route

Hire a car. It's cheaper than you might think, especially if you split the petrol costs between several passengers.

The classic route runs from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Tip: don't start in Cape Town itself. This part feels very European. Drive first to lesser-known areas, such as Addo or the wine regions around Robertson. That way, your trip feels full of adventure right from the start.

  • Hire a car for flexibility and better prices per person.
  • Start your trip outside Cape Town for a more exotic experience.
