Eating and drinking in Khao Sok: how to do it right

In November, mist often hangs over the limestone mountains of Khao Sok. The air is a bit cooler than in the drier months, and this shows at the table too: in the morning, people reach for something warm before heading into the park.

Breakfast before the hike

Most boat trips to Cheow Lan Lake start early. First, a minivan takes you from the village to the pier, sixty kilometres away, and that journey takes about an hour. So it is best to eat before you set off.

In November, the morning air in the jungle is cooler and more humid than you might think. A warm breakfast in the village or at your guesthouse works well then. The mistake people often make is waiting until the last moment and then having to rush for the minivan.

  • Eat before the minivan departs, not on the way.
  • Ask your accommodation what time the transfer to the pier leaves.
Khao Sok Village is small, but you will find everything you need after a day in the jungle.

Lunch by the river

If you are going canoeing on the Sok River, a light lunch is wise. It keeps you mobile and stops that heavy feeling setting in while you paddle.

Note that at the start of the dry season, the river can be too low for tubing. November falls outside that period, but the water level does fluctuate through the year. So ask in advance whether a trip can go ahead that day, rather than just turning up.

  • Choose something light if you are going canoeing afterwards.
  • Ask before departure if the water level is good enough for the trip.

A quiet moment towards evening

Towards the end of the afternoon, the sun drops and the mist returns over the mountains. That is a good moment to sit down in the village with something to drink.

In November, the sky is often clear after a cloudy day. People talk about what they saw that day: the night safari, the elephants, or a boat trip on the lake. Just join in. This is a place without fixed rules about when you arrive or leave.

  • Take your time, nobody expects you to leave quickly.
  • Ask people in the village about their experience with the night safari, as this gives good ideas for the next day.

Dinner in the village

Khao Sok Village is the best place to stay if you do not have your own transport, and that goes for dinner too. There is plenty of choice, from simple eateries to slightly more elaborate places.

After a day with a boat trip, a hike to a hidden cave, or a night in a floating bungalow, the village is the place to unwind. Late in the evening, the jungle falls quiet. The mistake visitors often make is choosing the first place they see, when walking a little further often pays off.

  • Walk through the village for a bit before you sit down to eat somewhere.
  • Stay overnight in the village itself if you do not have your own transport; it is the most convenient option for evenings.
