The flavours of Valencia: eating well in October
October is an excellent month to taste Valencia. It's less crowded and cooler than in summer, perfect for eating slowly on a terrace. Days stay warm enough for lunch outside, and evenings cool just enough for a long walk after dinner.

Breakfast on the plaza
The morning in Valencia starts gently, often on a plaza like the Plaza de la Virgen. In October the morning sun is pleasant there, not harsh. Many visitors make the mistake of walking straight past to the sights, when a quiet breakfast on a terrace is actually the best way to start the day.
- Find a spot on the Plaza de la Virgen for a calm start to the day.
- Refresh yourself at the fountain on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento on your way.
In Valencia, the day revolves around food, from the market in the morning to the terraces late into the evening.Valencia
Lunch at the market
For lunch, head to the Mercado Mossén Sorell, on the plaza of the same name. Here you eat fresh oysters among the local traders rather than among tourists. In October you can still eat outside comfortably, without the summer heat. The mistake many visitors make is choosing a tourist menu at the busy central plaza, when the market is fresher and cheaper.
- Try the fresh oysters at the Mercado Mossén Sorell.
- Walk on to the market instead of joining the crowded terrace queues on the plaza.
Drinks in Russafa
As afternoon turns to evening, head to the Russafa neighbourhood. It's lively, with cafés where mostly locals go. The mistake visitors often make is staying on the main streets, when the real atmosphere is in the side streets.
- Find the small cafés in Russafa's side streets rather than the main roads.
- Go on an ordinary evening and you'll sit among locals rather than tourists.
Dinner by the coast
For dinner, travel roughly half an hour to El Cabanyal, the old fishing quarter with its colourful houses. It feels very different from the centre. In October it's quiet there in the evening, the summer crowds are gone. Many visitors don't plan this neighbourhood in and so miss an evening that's completely different from the centre.
- Allow roughly half an hour travel time from the centre to El Cabanyal.
- Go deliberately in the evening, when it's calm and relaxed.
Late evening in the centre
Late in the evening, Valencia's centre really comes alive. The terraces fill up and restaurants stay open late. In October this is especially pleasant, as the night air is no longer oppressively warm. If you're staying in the centre, you can simply walk back after dinner to everything the city has to offer.
- Stay in the centre to be close to the evening terraces.
- Take a walk past the Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas after dinner.
