Tokyo and Kyoto: two faces of Japan

Tokyo is hectic and modern. Visit teamLab Planets, a museum full of digital artworks unlike anything you've seen before. For food, head to Harajuku Gyoza-ro, which makes the best dumplings in the city. They're cheap and taste amazing.

Kyoto is different. This is the cultural heart of Japan, full of temples and old neighbourhoods. Its heritage matches that of Paris or Rome. Plan at least a few days for this city.

  • Eat dumplings at Harajuku Gyoza-ro in Tokyo - cheap and delicious.
  • Take a free walking tour in Tokyo or Kyoto to get to know the city first.
  • The Japan Railpass is reliable and saves you a lot of money.

Hidden gems outside the big cities

Not everywhere has to be busy. Ushima Shrine on Kabushima Island is quiet and special. The coast near Hachinohe has beautiful natural scenery.

The Chugoku region is less busy and good for anyone who wants to travel sustainably. Japan also has special nature reserves where you can see wild animals.

  • Visit Ushima Shrine on Kabushima Island for some peace and quiet.
  • Drive along the Hachinohe coast for beautiful views.
  • The Chugoku region is less touristy and just as beautiful.

Book smart, stay smarter

Plan for around 12 days in Japan - that gives you enough time. Stay in a neighbourhood close to the JR train line, but not right in the centre itself. It's quieter there, and you can reach the city in 20 minutes.

Book a homestay: you'll live with a local family who cooks for you. It doesn't cost much more, but you'll eat much better and get to know the real Japan.

  • Stay in the suburbs, not the centre - quieter and cheaper.
  • Book bus tickets in advance.
  • Compare flight prices on different websites before you buy.
  • A homestay is the best way to get authentic food.
