Kefalonia and Lesvos in August: what you really need to see
Kefalonia is large, mountainous and full of surprises. Lesvos lies a bit further north and has its own character. Both islands are worth a visit - but plan enough time for them.

Kefalonia: beaches, caves and villages
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands. You'll find it all here: vineyards on the Paliki peninsula, the impressive Myrtos Beach with its steep white cliffs, and Melissani Cave, where you can row across an underground lake.
The villages of Fiskardo, Assos and Argostoli are pleasant spots for a meal and a wander. Sami is where the ferry docks.
- After you arrive, drive along the coast to your hotel first - you'll see straight away why the island is so special.
- Bring a map and plan out which villages and beaches you want to visit.
- Make sure you have at least six to seven days. The island is large, and you don't want to spend all your time driving.
Lesvos: mountains, villages and history
You reach Lesvos by ferry from Chios. The island feels different from Kefalonia - more mountains, more villages with character.
Agiasos is a mountain village where potters still practise their craft and the houses stand close together. Petra is built around a sandy bay and has Hotel Archontiko 1821, a good place to spend the night. In the west of the island lies a petrified forest - a unique sight.
- Don't let the mountain roads put you off - they lead to the best spots.
- Stay a few nights in Petra if you want to enjoy quiet village life.
- Explore the smaller villages too - that's where you really get a feel for island life.
Practical tips for your trip
August is busy on both islands. If you want to see fewer tourists, go for June or spring instead. It's still pleasantly warm then, and the beaches aren't full.
Plan your trip before you leave. Check which ferry connections exist and when they run - especially in August, when things can get busy. Leave enough time for the island itself. Many travellers say afterwards that they wish they'd stayed longer.
- Give yourself at least a week per island.
- Check the ferry schedules in advance.
- Bring a car - without one, you won't reach many places.
