What a trip through Belgium costs

In October, Belgium is a country of two faces. In the north, you walk through flat cities like Antwerp and Ghent, while in the south, you wander through hills and forests. A trip of just a few days is enough to get a taste of it all.

Tasting food and chocolate

Chocolate is everywhere in Belgium. There are about two thousand chocolate shops in the country, and even the smallest village has at least one. You see brands like Leonidas in every street, but Godiva, Neuhaus and Moeder Babelutte are also well-known names.

In October, you can walk through cities like Antwerp and Ghent without it being too warm to linger at a shop window. This makes tasting local chocolate a relaxed part of your day.

  • Buy your chocolate in Belgium itself, as it is cheaper than abroad.
  • Choose an independent chocolatier for more flavour and quality than the big brands.
You can find a chocolate shop in almost every village in Belgium.

Transport between cities

From Utrecht, it takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes by car to reach Belgium. You can also take the train.

Within Belgium, you travel between Flanders in the north and Wallonia in the south. The north is flat, with cities that look similar to those in the Netherlands. The south is hilly and wooded. In October, this difference in landscape is clearly visible, as the forests in the south turn different colours than the flat fields in the north.

  • Learn the French and Flemish names of cities, such as Luik (Liège) and Bergen (Mons), to avoid confusion.
  • Brussels is officially called the same in both languages: Bruxelles and Brussel are equal.

Accommodation: how many days do you need

Three days is enough to get a first impression of Belgium. You can split that time between a city like Bruges or Ghent and a quieter place like the seaside resort of De Haan.

In October, many people combine a city trip with a visit to history, for example at the battlefield of Waterloo. Bruges is the country's biggest draw, so expect other visitors at the famous spots around the old city centre.

  • Go to Bruges anyway, even though it is the busiest city: the river by the old city centre is worth seeing.
  • Seek out the peace of the south of the country for a landscape quite different from the north.
