Germany
The places in Germany you would otherwise miss
Germany is more than just busy cities and famous landmarks. In October the country becomes quieter, and you see a different side of it if you step off the main route for a while.

Bodenwerder
This small town along the Fairy Tale Route is the birthplace of Baron von Münchhausen, known as the Baron of Lies. You will see references to his made-up adventures throughout the streets. It is a quiet stop, just large enough for a short walk and an overnight stay.
Between the dunes and the old Hanseatic towns, you will find a Germany that does not force its story on you, but lets you discover it.Germany
Darss-Zingst peninsula
This peninsula in northern Germany has long sandy beaches and a landscape that changes greatly with the seasons. In October you can really feel that difference: the air is fresher and the coast lies quieter. From here you can also explore small islands off the coast, such as Rügen.
Wismar
Wismar was once an important Hanseatic trading town, along with Lübeck and Stralsund. The old facades at the harbour still recall that era. You can wander around here without the crowds of tourists you encounter in larger Hanseatic cities.
Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe
This park near Kassel covers 560 hectares and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It lies along the Fairy Tale Route, between Marburg and Bodenwerder. In October the trees in the park turn colour, a good reason to take a quiet walk through it.
The German wine route
This route runs 96 kilometres through the Palatinate, from Schweigen-Rechtenbach to Bockenheim an der Weinstrasse. October is the month when the grapes are harvested here, and you can see this in the vineyards along the road. Expect a journey of one to two days past winegrowers and small villages.
