Why August? It's safari season
In August, the weather on the north and east coast is perfect for your holiday. It sits around 27-28 degrees Celsius - warm and pleasant all year round. August is exactly the right time for a safari trip or a bird-watching walk in the jungle.
Plan at least twenty days if you want to see the island properly. Many travellers love nature and wildlife. So combine a safari with temples in Anuradhapura or a food tour in Jaffna.
- Ask in advance how long your day programmes run. Many visitors accidentally end up finishing around midday, then sit around with empty hours back at the hotel.
- Ask whether your guide speaks good English. It's the difference between a great day and a frustrating one.
Sri Lanka feels like an adventure of discovery: ancient ruins, wild animals in the jungle, and people everywhere who are happy to help you.Sri Lanka
What you really must see
Sigiriya Lion Rock is impressive - you climb up past ancient ruins of a royal palace. Galle Fort is just as beautiful: a sturdy coastal fortress from the colonial era, with views over the sea.
Want to take home something special? The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is spectacular, especially when you cross it on an old train. The village of Ella itself sits among hills full of tea plantations, and it's a lovely place to walk around.
- Go cycling along the southwest coast. It's a way to see the island you won't forget.
- Always drink bottled water. Tap water isn't safe for tourists.
Food, money and practical matters
You can't visit Sri Lanka without eating local food. The food tours in Anuradhapura and Jaffna let you try flavours you won't find anywhere else.
On the money side, the island is cheap. You can sort a visa easily online. Most importantly: make sure your day trips are actually packed with activities, not finished by midday. The locals are incredibly kind and genuinely want you to enjoy your stay.
- Pack light. You'll travel more easily and stay flexible.
- Check your day plans carefully before you book. Ask what time everything starts and finishes.
