When to visit Valencia: the best time for your trip

Valencia is worth visiting all year round, but the month you choose determines how much you pay and how many people are around you. September is a smart choice: you still get summer warmth, but the biggest crowds have passed.

Summer and September: warm water, fewer crowds

August is the busiest month in Valencia. It is warm, lively and full of other travellers. If you go in September, you reap the benefits: the water at the coast is still warm enough for swimming, but the streets and terraces are quieter than in July and August.

If you want to enjoy the beach in September without the summer chaos, that is a good plan. For those who prefer to stay somewhere a bit quieter, the El Cabanyal neighbourhood is a good escape. This old fishermen's quarter with colourful houses is close to the beach and is much quieter in the evenings than the centre.

  • Stay in El Cabanyal if you want to be close to the beach and seek peace in the evenings.
  • Cool off at the fountain on Plaza del Ayuntamiento, still lovely on a warm day in September.
Valencia is a city with a real fishermen's quarter, a huge street festival and an old centre to wander through without any rush.

March: the Fallas, the city's biggest festival

If you want to see Valencia at its most lively, plan your trip around the Fallas in March. It is the largest street festival in Spain, held in honour of Saint Joseph. Every neighbourhood has its own group that saves up all year to build enormous dolls, which are burnt at the end of the festival.

It is a unique experience, but keep in mind that the city gets packed and hotels become more expensive. If you would rather walk around peacefully, September is a more pleasant alternative: fewer people, still good weather and all the sights simply open.

  • Book well in advance if you want to experience the Fallas in March, as the city is packed.
  • If you prefer peace, choose September instead of March.

How to plan your visit best

Whichever month you arrive in, try not to cram everything into a few days. Valencia has enough to see to warrant taking a few days, such as the Cathedral and the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.

Stay in the centre for convenience. You can walk to most sights and you will be close to the terraces and restaurants in the evening. If you come in September, this is also the best place to enjoy long, warm evenings outside.

  • Stay in the centre for short distances and cosy evenings on a terrace.
  • Visit the Russafa neighbourhood for quiet, local cafés away from the crowds.
  • Rent a bike at Baja Bikes to discover the city at your own pace.
