When are you going to Bali? This is the best time

You can visit Bali all year round, but not every month feels the same. October falls within the dry season, making it one of the quieter, more pleasant months to go. Want to know when you should book? Here is how it breaks down by period.

July and August: high season, busy and expensive

July and August are the busiest months in Bali. It is dry and warm then, but the beaches and the famous temples are full. Flights and hotels are most expensive during these months.

If you do go during this period, book your tickets for the Kecak dance in Uluwatu well in advance. There are two performances every evening, at 18.00 and 19.00, and they fill up quickly.

  • Book flights and hotels at least two months in advance.
  • Reserve tickets for the Kecak dance in Uluwatu on time.
At sunset, the Uluwatu temple transforms into a stage of fire and rhythmic chanting.

October: dry, quiet and the best choice

October might just be the most pleasant month to go to Bali. The dry season is still in full swing, the crowds from July and August have gone, and prices are lower.

You can swim with turtles, explore the Ubud jungle or climb a volcano in October without queuing. The Gili Islands are also quiet then. On Gili Air you walk between palm trees without cars, and on Gili Meno you snorkel among colourful corals without the crowds.

  • Go in October for fewer crowds and lower prices.
  • Combine a few days at the beach with a hike to a crater rim.

November to March: the wet months

The rainy season begins in November. The rain often falls in short, heavy showers, usually in the afternoon or evening. The rest of the day can still be sunny.

It is warm and humid, and some roads inland can be harder to travel then. If you want to be sure of dry weather, avoid these months. If you want lower prices and fewer other travellers, this is an option, as long as you allow for the occasional wet afternoon.

  • Bring a light raincoat for the afternoon showers.
  • Plan outdoor activities for the morning instead.

April, May, June and September: quiet shoulder months

These months fall just outside the high season and are therefore a good alternative to October. It is dry, warm and less busy than in July and August.

There is plenty of room for adventure: ziplining through a deep gorge, a trek through the jungle or a quiet visit to a temple without groups everywhere. Just remember to wear modest clothing at temples as a sign of respect.

  • Wear a sarong or long trousers during a temple visit.
  • Go ziplining or hiking in the early morning while it is still cool.
